If you hadn’t yet gotten around to buying a commuter parking permit, you’re officially out of luck.
LSU Parking and Transportation Services said in an email to students Tuesday that it’s sold out of commuter parking permits.
Park & Geaux permits, which allow students to park in the Tiger Park East Lot on Skip Bertman Drive and shuttle to the Student Union, are still available.
There is now a waitlist for students to obtain commuter passes that is at least 900 students long.
The news was met with frustration by many students around campus, so much so that LSU released a statement days later.
“We understand this may be frustrating, especially since permits have typically remained available for longer periods in past years. This year’s higher demand, combined with limited space, meant we had to cap sales earlier than usual to align permits with the number of commuter spaces available,” LSU said in an email to students Thursday.
LSU also said the reason commuter spaces are out of stock earlier than usual is because of ongoing construction on LSU’s new dorms south of the College of Business, its Interdisciplinary Science Building and other infrastructure.
In the original email, LSU said that the majority of spaces in Touchdown Village East Lot will be unavailable as the university begins construction on the dorms. Correspondingly, some 300 spaces have been added in South Quad Lot.
The university warned students that the first few weeks of school will bring high demand for parking and seating on Tiger Trail buses.
In other transit news, LSU is adding a new Park & Geaux route that stops at Lockett Hall instead of the Union. In addition, the university will now have “Smart Boots” that students can release automatically from their vehicle by paying on an app.
Parking is one of LSU students’ main complaints — as the university’s enrollment continues to set new records each year, parking has expanded comparatively little.
Students should check their emails for further information on transit, including lot rezoning and Tiger Trail route changes.
