LSU interim athletic director Verge Ausberry addressed the media early Friday morning, after previous athletic director Scott Woodward was released.
Ausberry was accompanied by Chairman of the Board of Supervisors Scott Ballard and
Chairman of Athletics John Carmouche in the press conference.
Ausberry will lead the search for the next head football coach and his expectations are straight-forward.
“I'm going to hire the best football coach there is," Ausberry said. "LSU has to be in the playoffs every year in football."
“This big building here [Tiger Stadium] has to be successful, if we are going to be successful as an athletic department.”
Ben Bordelon former LSU football offensive lineman and Our Lady of the Lake CEO E.J. Kuiper will help Ausberry on the selection committee, along with Ballard and Carmouche. There is potentially a sixth member that will aid in the search.
As far as Woodward’s parting for LSU, Carmouche says, “LSU board of supervisions and Mr. Woodward decided jointly to part ways.”
Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry had no say in the decision to release Woodward. The board claims that LSU athletic’s success under Woodward’s tenure had no weight in the final decision.
“It had nothing to do with any of that; it had everything to do with the path of both conversations,” Ballard said. “It wasn’t an LSU thing; it wasn’t a Scott thing.”
Ballard said that there is no timeline for hiring a full-time athletic director. Their priority is finding LSU football’s next head coach.
