The breakthrough moment that LSU women’s tennis had been building toward all season finally arrived on the home courts in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, as the Tigers punched a ticket to the NCAA Sweet 16 in back-to-back seasons for the first time in program history.
In a weekend defined by resilience, depth and composure, LSU turned a regional hosting opportunity into a historic statement.
Hosting the opening rounds provided LSU both an advantage and a challenge. The expectations were high, and the Tigers had to deliver in front of a home crowd that believed this run could be special. They did exactly that, starting with a commanding performance in the first round.
LSU came out sharp in doubles, setting the tone early by securing the crucial doubles point. From there, the singles lineup took over, with efficient straight-set wins on multiple courts, preventing any chance of an upset. It was the kind of complete performance that reflected a team not just happy to be in the tournament, but intent on advancing.
The second round, however, tested LSU in a way that mirrored the intensity of postseason tennis. Facing a tougher opponent with more experience, the Tigers found themselves in battles across nearly every court. Once again, doubles proved pivotal. LSU edged out the point in a competitive doubles start, giving them a 1-0 lead that would loom large as singles play unfolded.
From there, it became a fight.
Several first sets were split, and momentum swung back and forth as courts tightened, but LSU’s depth ultimately made the difference. While one or two courts slipped away, the Tigers found answers in the middle and lower parts of the lineup, where composure under pressure carried them through.
A gritty three-set victory on one court shifted the energy, and another clutch finish soon followed, pushing LSU to the four points needed to clinch the match from freshman Caroline Kuhl to clinch the come-from-behind win over Rice.
When the final point was secured, it wasn’t just another win —- it was history.
“It’s a great thing for our program to be in back-to-back Sweet 16s,” said head coach Taylor Fogleman. “Rice really pushed us to the brink today.”
This Sweet 16 berth marks a defining milestone for a program that has steadily climbed the national ranks, but had never broken through to this stage in back-to-back years. It speaks to the balance LSU has built: a mix of experienced leadership, impactful newcomers and a lineup capable of winning in multiple ways.
Whether through dominant straight-set performances or grinding out three-set battles, the Tigers have proven they can adapt to any match scenario. How they’ve handled the moment is also equally important. The pressure of hosting, the weight of expectations and the intensity of the NCAA tournament play didn’t rattle LSU. Instead, it sharpened them.
That maturity could be a key factor as the competition only intensifies moving forward. Now, LSU heads into the Sweet 16 not as a feel-good story, but as a legitimate contender. The path ahead will feature deeper, more battle-tested teams, but the Tigers have already shown they belong.
And after making history on home courts, the Tigers will look to keep pushing the standard even further.
