A Doak Field sign was left damaged Sunday morning after a person whose name police would not release, shot multiple times with a 357 pistol, according to Campus Police.
According to Sgt. Jon Barnwell of Campus Police, officers overheard the shots during a shift change between 5 and 5:30 a.m.
“Officers responded at which time, they saw a vehicle leaving the parking lot,” Barnwell said.
Barnwell said officers “ducked behind the vehicle” and followed it down Dan Allen Drive. The vehicle then passed a stop sign and the police initiated an attempt to pull the “bluish-gray” vehicle over, he said.
Police were then involved in a chase, but as the vehicle started passing through red lights and going in the opposite direction of oncoming traffic, Barnwell said police decided it was “too unsafe to continue the pursuit.”
“We did get the license plate number and we’ve identified the person of interest,” Barnwell said.
According to Barnwell, there is no apparent reason for the shooting as of yet, but the investigation is still underway.
“It appeared to be a random act of firing a weapon,” he said.
