Now that Mobile World Congress is finally over, it’s time to talk about something besides phones and tablets.
Firstly, space.
1. SpaceX Docks with ISS (again)
SpaceX, the privately-owned space corporation, successfully connected its Dragon shuttle to the International Space Station for resupplying.
This is after a delay shortly after launch on March 1. Three of four thruster pods on the Dragon were not functioning, preventing the launch of solar arrays which would help power the shuttle to the ISS.
But engineers at SpaceX along with the help of NASA fixed the issue.
SpaceX is the first privately owned company to dock with the International Space Station. It’s first docking was May 25, 2012.
2. Mississippi Doctors Believe they cured an infant of HIV
This is definitely more science related than tech-related, but it’s still fascinating.
A child born with the disease was cured and shows no more signs of HIV infection, according to the National Institutes of Health.
Born in Mississippi to an infected mother, the infant received antiretroviral treatment shortly after birth with multiple anti-HIV drugs.
Eighteen months later, the treatment was stopped, and in Fall 2012, blood tests showed “undetectable HIV levels and no HIV-specific antibodies,” according to a CNET article.
This is only the second person in history to be cured of HIV infection. The first was Timothy Ray Brown, 45, in 2007.
