For the second time in the 2013 campaign, LSU senior pitcher Rachele Fico has been named the Southeastern Conference Pitcher of the Week.
Fico posted 30 strikeouts through the two games she pitched in the Tigers’ conference opener against Mississippi State — 22 of which came in Fico’s 14-inning Friday outing.
A weekend ERA of .33 was an SEC-low for Fico — 1.25 lower than her team’s overall ERA.
The Connecticut native’s 22 strikeouts topped former LSU All-American Britni Sneed’s 12-year-old, single-game strikeout record of 18 retirements.
Fico leads the way for the Tiger pitching staff, retiring 127 batters through 97 innings pitched, and securing a 12-3 record so far this season.
“Rachele was fantastic for us all weekend,” said LSU coach Beth Torina in a news release. “I enjoy watching her pitch day in and day out. Her performance on Friday night was one of the most gutsy and memorable performances I’ve witnessed.”
Fico’s first 2013 SEC Pitcher of the Week honor came after an opening weekend when the senior threw 20 strikeouts in 17 innings pitched.
This title marks Fico’s fourth career weekly award.
