The LSU swimming and diving teams began their Southeastern Conference Championship competition in College Station, Texas with a bang as the No. 20 men’s team is in second place and the women are tied for second place after Tuesday’s events came to a close.
Junior diver Daniel Helm earned a bronze medal in the men’s one-meter springboard with a season-best score of 372.10.
“Daniel accomplished one of his goals today,” said LSU diving coach Doug Shaffer in a news release. “It was a step in the right direction.”
Sophomore Frank Greef, senior Craig Hamilton, sophomore Dillon Love and senior Nick Kunkel also made history today as their time of 6:25.67 was good for a new program record in the men’s 800 freestyle relay. The mark was good for a seventh place finish and an NCAA ‘B’ cut.
The Lady Tigers 200 medley relay team of freshman Caley Oquist, junior Torrey Bussey, junior Rainey White and sophomore Amber Carter finished sixth with a time of 1:37.80 which earned them an NCAA automatic qualification.
The second day of competition is set to begin Wednesday at 10 a.m.
