Running back Jeremy Hill shined as LSU (4-0 overall, 1-0 Southeastern Conference) beat Auburn (3-1 overall, 1-1 SEC) 35-21 in LSU’s first SEC matchup of the season.
Hill rushed right through the Auburn defense, finishing with 191 yards on 25 carries with three touchdowns. His rushing performance is the best by an LSU player since Alley Broussard ran for 250 yards to break the school record against Ole Miss in 2004.
LSU’s defense contributed to the first two scores of the game. LSU linebacker Lamin Barrow recovered an Auburn fumble on the first drive of the game, setting up a 49-yard rushing touchdown by Hill with 11:16 left in the first quarter.
Auburn failed to get the punt off on the next possession. The turnover on downs put LSU in excellent field position for Jeremy Hill to score from 10 yards out for his second touchdown of the game.
In the second quarter, Hill’s 54-yard rush set up a 1-yard score from fullback J.C. Copeland. The 21 point LSU lead was the largest of the game as the Tigers held Auburn scoreless going into halftime.
Auburn scored less than three minutes into the second half on a 2-yard rush from running back Tre Mason.
After two controversial calls that erased Jarvis Landry scores, LSU was able to finally score through, guess who, Hill. The 6-yard rush put LSU ahead 28-7. Mason was able to score another touchdown before the quarter ended, putting Auburn behind by only 14 points going into the fourth quarter.
Quarterback Zach Mettenberger through a strike to Jarvis Landry on the opening play of the fourth quarter to give the Tigers some breathing room with a 35-14 lead. Auburn fought back with an impressive 10-play, 88-yard drive capped with a touchdown, but it was too late for the blue and orange. LSU didn’t need to score again and won the game 35-21.
The LSU air attack was impressive once again. Mettenberger completed 14 of 22 passes for 229 yards, one touchdown and one interception. Wide receiver Jarvis Landry led the receiving core with 118 yards and one touchdown.
