Aside from the big four in Zach Mettenberger, Jarvis Landry, Odell Beckham Jr. and Jeremy Hill, there were other Tigers who showcased their ability to NFL scouts in a last chance effort to improve their draft stock.
Wide receivers Kadron Boone and James Wright flew under the radar becauase of the understandable amount of attention on the standout talents of Beckham and Landry, but turned in strong performances.
With Beckham not performing in the individual events like the 40-yard dash, it left just Wright, Boone and Landry to showcase what they could do to match Beckham’s blazing time at the NFL Combine in February.
Boone ran a 4.44 40-yard dash on Wednesday’s Pro Day, which bested Landry by more than a tenth of a second at the LSU Pro Day and also was just a hundredth of a second slower than Beckham’s time at the combine in February. Boone also had a vertical of 33 inches, besting Landry’s 30.5-inch jump.
Boone said he wanted to leave everything out on the field and show the NFL personnel he could compete with higher-ranked prospects.
Wright was also able to perform well in the shadows of his teammates, running a 4.52 40-yard dash, while also recording a vertical of 38.5 inches. Wright’s vertical tied with Beckham for highest among LSU receivers.
Both receivers said they felt good about their performances Wednesday, and they have received favorable attention from scouts, but they want to continue to improve in hopes of making a team.
Both Boone and Wright aren’t projected to get drafted in this year’s NFL draft, according to CBSSports.com, but their performance during Pro Day might have helped their case.
Freak and Ego stay the course
Anthony Johnson and Ego Ferguson were the only two defensive linemen to run drills Wednesday for LSU and neither really improved on their combine performances.
Johnson did not participate in the individual events, choosing to stay with the results he recorded at the combine, leaving only Ferguson to participate.
In the 40-yard dash, Ferguson recorded a time of 5.08 which was faster than Johnson’s time at the combine of 5.24 seconds.
Ferguson has lost weight since the combine, weighing in at 302 pounds compared to his combine weigh-in of 315 pounds. Johnson gained three pounds since the combine, weighing in at 311 pounds.
Jones, Barrow impress during drills
Three linebackers worked out along with two defensive backs, including Tahj Jones who pulled double duty, working out with both groups.
Jones worked out as a defensive back on top of his natural position of linebacker most likely because of his small frame for a linebacker, measuring in at 6 feet, 1 inch and 205 pounds.
The transition was smooth with Jones catching all of the balls thrown his way, using his 4.54 40-yard dash speed to impress those in attendance.
Jones will most likely go into the draft as a flex player who can be utilized at either defensive back or linebacker depending on the team’s needs. His flex workout today will hope to give him positive draft stock as he isn’t projected to be selected in the draft.
Lamin Barrow was the standout of the three linebackers who worked out.
Barrow said he wanted to prove to the scouts that he can cut to the ball and change direction with relative speed.
“I’ve gotten a pretty good reaction from scouts,” Barrow said. “Everybody from Minnesota to Jacksonville. … I’ve been talking to teams like [Philadelphia] teams in that nature that I think have an interest in me, but you never know until draft day.”
Trai Turner looks to prove he’s ready for pros
One Tiger left some fans and experts scratching their heads today when he announced his decision to leave for the NFL draft, and Wednesday, Trai Turner looked to prove he’s NFL ready.
Before he even started his workout, offensive coordinator Cam Cameron had nothing but high hopes for Turner moving forward.
“I know he’ll perform well [at the next level],” Cameron said. “Trai is one of those players you’d love to have back. He’s improved since the beginning of the season. He has got guard-center value, and most people don’t know that about him. If he has to play center, he can play center because you have to.”
During his workout, Turner was seen snapping some balls during Mettenberger’s workout, along with his normal offensive line drills, where he performed well.
Old faces
Among the four former LSU players to participate in pro day were former quarterback Jordan Jefferson and former defensive end Sam Montgomery.
There were no recorded stats for Montgomery besides his height and weight at the pro day. He is a current free agent in the NFL after unsuccessful stints with both the Houston Texans and Oakland Raiders in 2013.
Jefferson participated in Wednesday’s workouts in hopes of gaining attention from NFL personnel in attendance.
