The LSU gymnastics squad’s big weekend, highlighted by wins against No. 11 Arkansas and No. 2 Oklahoma, didn’t go unnoticed, nor did the individual feats of a couple of Tiger gymnasts.
Senior Sarie Morrison and freshman Ashleigh Gnat racked up Southeastern Conference awards for their standout performances this past weekend.
Morrison claimed the SEC Specialist of the Week title after she won titles in three of the four events she competed in against Arkansas and Oklahoma.
The Texas native scored a 9.925 on the uneven bars twice this weekend to get her third and fourth bars titles of the season. She also scored a 9.975 on the vault against Oklahoma to capture the vault title, her third of the season.
Morrison’s team high vault score against the Sooners led the Tigers to a 49.600 vault total — the nation’s highest vault score this season.
This is the second time this season Morrison has won the SEC’s weekly award. The first was after her performance against Centenary College in the Tigers’ season opener.
Gnat was named SEC Freshman of the Week after she claimed the first individual titles of her young career.
Against Arkansas, Gnat won the vault title with a score of 9.900, which tied her season high in the event. She then won the beam title against the Sooners, scoring a season-high 9.900.
The Tigers hope Morrison and Gnat repeat these stellar performances when they compete in the Metroplex Challenge on Saturday in Fort Worth, Texas.
