Thanks to a new initiative from President Obama, student workers will get paid more in the coming months. The minimum raise hike announced at the recent State of the Union address will raise the minimum wage to $10.10. Zalika Joyner works in the library as a student workker. Currently she makes minimum wage of $7.25 an hour. The executive order will benefit almost all federal employees, which includes LSU student workers. Zalika said she is very excited about the new raise because it will help the cost of being a college student. Student worker, Jessica Chappuis believes that the minimum wage hike will benefit the cost of living. Zalika shares her concern that some people may not be employed because companies may not be able to afford hiring them. The White House believes the new policy could benefit up to 250,000 people. Minimum wage has not been raised since 2009 when George W. Bush signed a law making the increase. The current minimum wage equals about $15,000 a year, below the national poverty line.
