Many students will be spending their holiday break turning in homework, but that may soon end. A resolution limiting how professors assign work over breaks passed after being voted on in the Student Government Senate.
Resolution 21 prevents professors from making homework due over a break. It also stops them from being able to assign new homework through email or Moodle while students are already on break.
“So when you get an email on thanksgiving night for something that’s going to be due on Monday, we’re trying to stop that,” said Jacques Petit, creator of the resolution .
The goal of the resolution is to let students enjoy the few breaks they get during the semester. This fall, the University only had five days scheduled as a holiday. The resolution wouldn’t prevent professors from assigning homework over or during weekends.
Students who support the resolution hopes this will help them be able to have more free time over breaks. “I think it a great idea because breaks should be a time for student to relax and recuperate from the normal school weeks,” Senior Margaret Saux said.
The resolution will soon be presented to the faculty senate and the provost for approval. Petit hopes they understand why a policy like this is needed.
“This isn’t supposed to be we are mad with the professor or were upset with the professor. This is just look we need a break,” Petit said.
