As I joined fellow College Republicans in Free Speech Alley Wednesday afternoon to help recruit new members, I could not help but find myself frustrated with our Democratic counterparts across the way. They too were recruiting and doing their best to get out their message. However, two of the phrases they were using to garner attention struck me in a negative light: “Equal pay for equal work,” and “Support Mary Landrieu!”
Now, I know what you’re thinking. How could two seemingly innocent phrases like that rub someone the wrong way?
Since the so-called “War on Women” was started (seemingly in 2012 following the “binders full of women” comment being taken out of context during our last presidential campaign), the left has lambasted Republicans for the pay-gap that exists between men and women of the same employment position. It’s for this very reason that I find it important to highlight the level of hypocrisy in the combination of the two aforementioned phrases.
With minimum research on the good ol’ Google, I was able to find an April 2014 USA Today article giving detailed specifics of the hypocrisy in their message. I’d like to share my findings with our fellow students.
According to the American Enterprise Institute, Senator “Air-Mary” Landrieu pays her female employees 88 cents on the dollar in relation to their male counterparts. Ironically, this is not unlike her voting record, which is in line with President Barack Obama. That’s right, President Obama also pays his women employees at 88 percent of what his male employees make in the White House.
I find my frustration justified. College Dems of LSU are no different than the party at the national level: out of touch. The demagoguery from the left needs to stop on this issue and others too. LSU’s students deserve better.
