Student safety is the number one concern for colleges. And with the increase in apps for phones, students seem to put all of their trust in them.
But, what happens when students cannot get to their phones in time?
Colleges across the nation have already employed a level of security that surpasses cellular devices because it requires a simple push of a button. Code-Blue Emergency Phones are not a new invention, but they are becoming a trend.
Southeastern Louisiana University is one of the many universities with this system installed, and the students have nothing but for praise Code-Blue. Sharon Ann Ourso, a student at SLU, says that the system is useful for any time she feels uncomfortable on campus.
“You can press the button and it alerts the security police officers on campus,” Ourso said. “They’ll come to your blue code location and check out the location to make sure you’re safe and that you feel safe.”
Ourso stated that every campus should invest in the Code-Blue system because the students feel better knowing that there are extra precautions in order to keep them safe.
Cory Lalonde, LSU Police Department Captain, said that the Code-Blue system has been discussed and is still under consideration in regards to implementing it on campus. The recent focus for LSU PD is the LSU Shield App that was released on Tuesday.
“With one push of a button, once you open that app it automatically contacts the LSU Police Department via phone call just like 9-1-1,” Captain Lalonde explained.
LSU continues moving toward a more secure environment for all students, and all that the Security Department asks in return is that the students remain vigilant when traveling on campus.
