For those coming out of your Ice Storm-party hangover, there was some significant news in the tech world this week.
1. Google sells Motorola
Remember the explosion that happened across tech blogs in 2011 when Google bought Motorola and its patents for a staggering $12.5 billion?
Well, that didn’t last long. Lenovo just bought the manufacturing parts of the company for $2.9 billion on Wednesday.
It’s honestly not that surprising of a move — meaning it makes sense that Google doesn’t want to keep a $1 billion annual loss around.
In the two years that Google owned Motorola, we got the “meh” Moto X and…that’s it. At least, that’s what the public got from it. Google got all of Motorola’s 2,000+ patents, which they retain despite the sale to Lenovo.
What’s Google going to do with those patents? Not a clue.
But at least Lenovo has an means of entry into the U.S. smartphone marketplace now? Odd for a company that mainly makes tablets and laptops stateside, but we’ll see how it goes.
Maybe they’ll make the RAZR successor everyone’s been waiting for. And I don’t want that touchscreen “smart” phone Droid RAZR that came out last year. I want an old-school, T9, text-from-your-pocket kind of phone.
2. Nothing else major happened.
Okay, so I might have lied at the beginning of this post. But I’m sorry, I’m not going to waste time writing about the recycled iPhone rumors that crop up every year.
Seriously? Two new phones with different screen sizes, again?
Unfortunately, the spring semester always starts slow in terms of tech news. All the companies are coming off of holiday highs, and with CES in early January, no one wants to step on the shoes of the biggest consumer electronic show in the world.
But hopefully the news picks up between now and next Thursday! Until then, keep it tuned here for the latest and greatest in tech.
