A new brand of powdered alcohol named Palcohol has been approved by the Alcohol Tax and Trade Bureau.
The product which was approved last week was created by Arizona based firm Lipsmark who hopes to debut it this summer. The company was approved to sell four flavors including vodka, rum, cosmopolitan and powderita.
According to the company when mixed with six ounces of water the product recreates the alcohol content of one mixed drink. Mark Phillips, the creator of Palcohol, said he invented the product for the freedom to enjoy alcohol everywhere.
“Carrying around liquid alcohol and mixers to make a margarita for instance was totally impractical,” Phillips said in a video he posted to Youtube.
Lawmakers across the country are concerned about the implications that would result from the product being introduced in their states. Several states, including Louisiana, have banned the sale of the product.
Concerns in various states stem from the fear that the powder could be snuck into places where alcohol is not allowed.
Several experts are also worried about the product being abused by teens and young adults. Assistant unit chief of psychiatry at Zucker Hillside Hospital in New York Dr. Scott Krakower told LiveScience.com there is a high potential for misuse of this product among young people.
“Because the product is a powder that people can mix into a drink themselves, teens may ingest higher amounts of the powered alcohol, or they may mix it with other powered drugs, which could be hazardous,” Krakower said to LiveScience.
