Roller derby meets beauty pageants is a summed-up synopsis of the movie “Whip It.”
The movie stars Ellen Page as Bliss Cavendar, a teenager growing up in Texas. Cavender would much whether be a tomboy and hang out in Austin, but her mother thinks differently and wants her to stay out of the city and be a pageant queen.
This causes Page’s wardrobe in the film to have two sides — tomboy and feminine.
The feminine side comes from what Page has to wear during her pageants. The structured pink dress Page wears with a curly updo is something easily attainable for an everyday wardrobe. The dress has a 50s-esque silhouette with its structured shape and high neckline. Taking a trip to a vintage clothing store would make finding this dress a breeze.
If you’re more a tomboy like Page’s other side, this look is a lot more causal.
Page goes with classic band tees and denim for all of her looks outside of the pageant clothing. Finding this clothing would take another trip to a vintage clothing store or to a thrift store. Choose a band t-shirt that calls to your music taste or personal taste. Pair the top with your best fitting denim.
Page does have one more look in the film and that is her roller derby uniform.
The team takes inspiration for its name and costume from Girl Scout uniforms, but with a bit of an edge.
This outfit isn’t easy to wear every day since it looks more like a Halloween costume, but elements of it can be added to your closet to get a good medium between Page’s feminine and tomboy looks.
Elements from the ensemble include a circle skirt in any color your choice and a collared, button up. These elements together allow masculine to meet feminine and create a look that’s dressy, but also causal.
The roller skates and pageant crown are optional accessories.
