A battle cry rang from the Capitol steps as hundreds of students marched in protest against the looming state budget cuts to higher education.
“Legislators need to know that they have to be scared if they are going to stand against higher education,” said Justin DiCharia, one of the protest organizers.
Several representatives like Dan Claitor encourage the students to keep up the fight.
“Before you disperse you should consider taking a walk about three quarters, half a mile that way they have a white house behind a fence on the lake that needs to hear that your engaged in higher education and that you want no more cuts,” Claitor said.
Teachers at LSU like John Dickson also join the protest, who says these cuts are negatively affecting the reputation of the school.
“That’s whats hurting us most right now, recruiting, its a great concern,” Dickson said. “When I work that hard and we realize that kids may or may not come here because of what they hear.”
“I am personally worried about my last year of college, especially as a spanish minor,” LSU student and protest organizer Valencia Richardson said. “Someone who has a foot in the humanities department which tends to be hit the most.”
Students say this is only the beginning and they will continue to fight for higher education.
