With less than one month of school left, students’ dreams of summer are so close that they can taste them. Although summer brings fun in the sun, it also brings masses of people to the gym to try to get that perfect beach body.
The LSU recreation center Fitness and Wellness Coordinator Jennifer Mills says that the UREC offers students everything from regular gym equipment to personal training.
“I think people want a quick fix, and, in our culture, we tend to want a quick fix,” Mills explained. “We want to do something and just have an answer really quickly, but, if you just maintain that healthy lifestyle, you don’t have to worry about these ups and downs, ups and downs of yo-yo dieting or anything like that.”
According to fitness.gov, including lean meats, vegetables, whole grains, water, and other healthy choices in your daily food intake while cutting back on solid fats can dramatically affect your health. Students like freshman marketing major Taylor Schultz have healthy food tips that they use on a daily basis.
“I snack a lot so I can keep my metabolism up,” Schultz said. “I drink a lot of water because like every time I drink water makes my skin look radiant.”
Hours in the gym seven days a week are not necessary in order to stay in shape. Healthy fitness maintenance only requires 30 minutes a day of moderate physical activity five days a week.
“Just start small and stay consistent,”Mills said. “If you can stay focused on that one small goal and do a new goal each week, then you’re going to make progress.”
Along with the UREC, students also have access to nutritionists at the Student Health Center. Unhealthy crash diets before swimsuit season do not have to be an annual activity. By making healthy life choices daily, they become routine and keep you feeling good all year long.
