The recording industry has decided to make Friday the global release day for albums according to Billboard. Currently release days are decided by country, with Tuesday being the standard in the United States.
The industry chose Friday due to digital piracy. Albums are typical pirated immediately after they’re released meaning in countries with release dates earlier sales often suffer.
Industry representatives were also inspired by artist like Beyonce and Drake who released their most recent albums on Fridays and saw record numbers.
Many labels and industry executives are concerned about the impact this will have on unknown artists.
The change will occur this summer.
