After months of campaigning, the election has come to an end, and John Bel Edwards is our new Louisiana governor.
Election Night at the Vitter Camp began with positivity and hopefulness for all attendees at his Election Party.
“I’m confident David will win,” said Congressman Charles Boustany (R-La. 3rd District).
“I still expect him to win at the end, but it’s been a tight race,” said Congressman John Fleming (R-La. 4th District). “My understanding is that the polls have closed in the last few days.”
Even some LSU students came to support Congressman Vitter as he awaited the results of the race.
“I think that a lot of college students complain that candidates don’t talk about the issues enough,” said David Scotton, LSU Student. “And that’s all David Vitter did for the past year and a half was talk about the issues.”
Around 9:30, the party received the bad news, that John Bel Edwards had won the election. The crowd was obviously somber, but they showed a great amount of support for the Senator as he made his concession speech.
“Well, we came up short tonight. Let me rephrase that. I came up short. You all were fabulous,” said Sen. Vitter. “Thanks so much for your passion and your dedication and your love and your hard work. We are so honored by that, and we always will be.”
Supporters of Sen. Vitter at his election party included a few congressmen, who expressed their surprise at the results.
“You know it’s a bit shocking. You know only a month ago we expected that Senator Vitter would be an easy win for our next governor, but it just didn’t turn out that way,” said Congressman Fleming.
Over 1 million Louisianians voted, and Edwards received 55 percent of the votes. During Vitter’s concession speech, he congratulated John Bel Edwards and wished him the best.
Sen. Vitter also said that he will not be running for another term as senator, meaning that there is now a chair wide open for politicians in Louisiana.
The end of one election season will lead us directly into the beginning of another, as Senator Vitter begins his last year in the Senate.
