John Bel Edwards reaches out to potential voters by shaking hands, handing out flyers and walking around tailgates.
Edwards is a democratic state representative who supports gun rights and pro-life efforts. His main focus is the budget and how it will affect higher education.
“We are going to stop those annual double digit tuition increases and we are going to start funding higher education more generously through investments of the states general fund,” said Edwards.
Edwards said his democratic status in a dominantly republican state should not turn-off voters because of Bobby Jindal’s poor performance as a republican governor.
“People in this cycle are not going to be voting party,” said Edwards. “They are going to be looking at individuals and see who is best qualified by experience.”
Critics of his campaign like the Republican Governors Association released attack ads that compare him to Obama for supporting medicaid expansion.
“If we are not willing to take our working poor and give them healthcare coverage with the dollars we’re paying to Washington, we are making a tremendous mistake,” said Edwards “I will not back up from that position.”
Edwards said the Republican Governors Association created the attack ads because they are afraid of his high rankings in the polls. According to a WAFB-TV/Raycom Media poll Edwards is in the lead. The poll surveyed 602 registered voters and shows that Edwards is leading with 24 percent while Vitter has 21 percent. The poll also shows Edwards beating Vitter in a run-off election by 52 percent.
This is good news for students like Robert Lancon who help volunteer for Edwards campaign
“He’s always fought for veterans issues, something that’s very dear to me,” said Lancon. “He is the biggest champion in the Louisiana Legislature for higher education issues.”
Edwards campaign will also focus on improving the relationship between police and citizens. According to a Washington Post Article, ¼ of policemen who were shot and killed in the United States have been in Louisiana this year.
“We can never accept violence directed against police officers who are out there trying to keep us safe but we have to have a conversation,” said Edwards “We have people in society who feel like they’ve been marginalized”
