LSU and the University of South Carolina might be on opposing sides on the field, but LSU has taken a large step toward helping the recovery process of South Carolina after the hurricane.
In response to the recent flooding and destruction of Hurricane Joaquin, Louisiana is using today’s game as a way to raise funds for South Carolina. The Red Cross of Louisiana also came to help, and the organization set up multiple stations around the stadium where volunteers collected money in cans.
“We’re going to be here We are going to collect those funds, we are going to wrap the fans in love and we are going to send a message to South Carolina that they are not fighting this alone,” explained Louisiana Red Cross Regional Chief Executive Officer Kay Wilkins. “Who better than someone from Louisiana to understand what it’s like to lose everything you’ve known in a flood.”
Red Cross volunteers have been joined by a few LSU student organizations, and they are stationed around the stadium with cans accepting donations for South Carolina.
“Just kind of knowing that I can actually help show support is something that I want to always do,” said LSU ROTC Freshman Ashton Vaughn.
But the Red Cross isn’t the only helping hand South Carolina fans are receiving today. They are also being welcomed with open arms by the fans at LSU through invitations to tailgates, signs, and even words of encouragement.
“Everyone that we have met has been completely welcoming with open arms and friendly and wonderful, which is a little shocking considering how intimidating this environment and stadium can be,” said Mandy Bagnal, a hospital employee in Columbia, SC.
Whether it’s donating money to the Red Cross or just sending out an encouraging word, South Carolina fans have continued to express their gratitude to all of those who are helping out in their time of need.
