Snapchat is now offering users a glimpse at stories outside of their social sphere with their newest update.
This week the company launched its new Discover feature, which allows users to access content from 11 different media companies including CNN, Vice Media and ESPN. Each media channel will post daily “editions” featuring articles, video and photography.
The organizations will share five or more of its best or most popular stories of the day with users. In true Snapchat fashion, each edition will refresh after 24 hours making older content inaccessible.
The update is the company’s attempt to move away from its original use.
“This is not social media,” Team Snapchat said.
The new feature also marks the beginning of the company’s focus on monetization instead of user base expansion. Each edition will include advertisements and all of the media organizations featured in Discover will be sharing ad revenue with Snapchat.
With Discover Snapchat hopes to engage with its users in a new way but also to offer them valuable and exciting content.
“Each channel brings you something unique – a wonderful daily surprise! Happy discovering,” Team Snapchat said.
