LSU has named Alabama Linebackers Coach Kevin Steele as the new Defensive Coordinator to replace the departed John Chavis. Steele, 56, has perviously worked as a Defensive Coordinator at Alabama (2007) and Clemson (2009-2012).
He has served as a Defensive Assistant to Nick Saban, Dabo Swinney, Dom Capers and Hall of Famers Tom Osborne, Bobby Bowden, and Johnny Majors. Steele was the Head Coach at Baylor University from 1999 to 2002.
During his tenure, the Bears went 9-36, with a 1-31 record in Big 12 Conference play. He spent four years in the NFL as the Linebackers Coach for the Carolina Panthers.
His time in Carolina was highlighted with NFC West championship and an appearance the NFC Championship Game in 1996. He played Linebacker for two seasons at the University of Tennessee.
Coach Steele is a native of Dillon, South Carolina, where he was a neighbor and friend of former LSU Defensive Coordinator John Chavis, who was his teammate at Tennessee. LSU is expected to hold a press conference to announce Steele’s hiring Wednesday afternoon.
