The Heisman Trust announced the three finalists invited to New York City for the Heisman Trophy ceremony Monday afternoon. After a historic 11-game regular season, LSU sophomore running back Leonard Fournette did not make the cut.
The three finalists were Alabama running back Derrick Henry, Stanford running back Christian McCaffrey and Clemson quarterback Deshaun Watson.
Fournette rose to the top of many Heisman polls following his 228 yard performance against Auburn in September. But after an underwhelming November, the sophomore failed to receive enough votes to be invited to New York.
The Tigers’ running back finished the season as the national leader in yards per game and top-five in the country in rushing touchdowns. Henry and McCaffrey are the only two players ahead of Fournette in total rushing yards on the year, having played two more games.
Fournette is a finalist for the Doak Walker award for the nation’s best running back, joining Henry and McCaffrey. The Doak Walker will be announced as part of the College Football Awards show Thursday.
Fournette will play his final game of the 2015 season on Dec. 29 against Texas Tech in the Advocare V100 Texas Bowl in Houston.
