The LSU rugby team (5-1) continued its spring dominance Saturday with a 56-3 victory against Ole Miss in Baton Rouge.
The win secured the Tigers’ No.1 spot in the Southeastern Collegiate Rugby Conference’s Western division.
LSU entered the game Saturday ready to prove to the rest of the SEC that it was a force to be reckoned with, junior fly-half Allen Alongi said.
Alongi said the team had been practicing a tight, organized game plan all week, but early errors led to the need for some adjustments.
“We were trying to go along with the plan, but we kept dropping the ball and decided to just go for it to get a score,” he said.
Despite the early sloppy play, the Tigers managed their first score after 10 minutes had expired off the clock.
The offense continued to roll after that, with Alongi, Cameron Falcon and Paul Rogers notching scores. Alongi earned a hat trick for the day, and Falcon scored two of his own.
Alongi said although Ole Miss had some skill, its weak formations allowed the LSU squad to capitalize on any chance it was given.
“They knew how to play, and they were trying to slip it past us in any way they could,” he said. “But they didn’t have a lot of structure, which allowed us to use our skill to regain possession quickly.”
The Rebels (2-2) were tied with Alabama for the No. 2 spot in the West going into Saturday’s match, but the loss should allow the Crimson Tide to take the position.
Because the Tigers won Saturday, they will now get a shot at redemption against Florida, the No. 2 team in the East.
