I can’t begin to describe the amount of squealing I did when I heard “The Hobbit” by J. R. R. Tolkien was becoming a movie. My love for the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy knows no bounds, and since this is a prequel of sorts for the trilogy, you can only imagine my happiness for this book as well.
If you are familiar with the “Lord of the Rings” characters, you’ll know many of the characters who appear in the trilogy are in “The Hobbit.” The book stars Frodo Baggins’ relative Bilbo, who gives Frodo the ring in the first movie. The whole book is basically Bilbo’s adventure of leaving The Shire and finding the ring that causes all the crap in the following three books.
I won’t give away specifics on the adventure because I don’t want to spoil the movie for any of those losers (just kidding) who haven’t read the book yet. Just know that “The Hobbit” is set in the same world where freaking Gollum is still alive. There are wizards, giant spiders, dwarves and dragons.
I was pumped to find out the actor who will play Bilbo is Martin Freeman. Freeman can also be found in “Love Actually” and BBC’s “Sherlock.” On IMDB, it says that Benedict Cumberbatch, who plays Sherlock in “Sherlock,” will also be in the movie. These two are amazing actors, and I look forward to seinge them act outside their Sherlock roles together.
Elijah Wood (Frodo), Ian McKellen (Gandalf) and Andy Serkis (Gollum) will all revisit their characters in the movie adaptation. If any of you ladies out there are sad, like I am, that there will be nothing good to look at — no Legolas (Orland Bloom) or Aragorn (Viggo Mortensen) — here’s hoping there’s some good eye candy.
“The Hobbit” is going to be split into three movies, like the three books in “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy. I’m not quite sure how the producers and writers are going to stretch the book out to three movies, but I hope that all the fans will be in for a pleasant surprise instead of the crap fest we got with the splitting up of “Breaking Dawn.”
If you’re in the mood for a hopefully kick-ass movie over winter break, check out “The Hobbit.” It releases to all of us eager, Middle Earth fans on Dec. 14, 2012, which is an awesome end to finals. Check out the trailer here if you’re lame and have never heard of this awesomeness.
