Now that the excitement of Apple’s conference has subsided, let’s talk about one something.
1. Who is the iPad Mini for?
The iPad Mini is supposed to be Apple’s “next big thing.” It’s supposed to laugh in the face of the Kindle Fire HD, Nexus 7 and Nook Tablet.
But will it?
There’s no doubt millions will be sold on November 2. It’s an Apple product; that’s simply understood.
However, it’s hard to compete with 7-inch tablets $129 cheaper than your own, which is what the Mini is supposed to do.
Any sensible consumer will look at a $199 or $249 Nexus 7 and be attracted to the price in addition to the device. But a $329 iPad? Attractive compared to a regular iPad, maybe. Not compared to similarly-sized tablets.
It’s more than $100 more expensive than its supposed “competitors.” I just don’t know who this product is targeted toward.
But of course, I want one.
2. Zynga lays off 100 people, tries to hide announcement
When is the best time to deliver bad news? Right in the middle of the biggest tech news conference of the month.
Social gaming developer Zynga announced it laid off more than 100 employees and shuttered 13 older games in the middle of Apple’s iPad announcement on October 23.
Not the most ethical move. Shares of its already low stock dropped another five percent after the news broke.
My thoughts go out to all those affected.
That’s all the news for this week! Make sure to check back next Tuesday for the latest and greatest in tech.
