Two Door Cinema Club has managed the impossible: a sophomore album that isn’t out-shined by its acclaimed predecessor. “Beacon,” recorded in L.A., showcases a return of the Irish import’s fast-paced, foot-tapping sound. “Pyramid” and “Sun” exemplify the band’s foray into more complex melodies with intricate bass work woven around rapid-fire synths. While still energetic, the feel of the new album differs from 2010’s “Tourist History.” The formerly introverted and fretful lyricism has been replaced with choruses of cautious optimism. The yearning quality of lead singer Alex Trimble’s vocals adds merit to empathic songs that convey the vulnerability of taking risks. “Beacon” is sophisticated and sleekly produced, but fans may miss the gritty angst that accompanied Two Door Cinema Club’s earlier work. It seems the California sunshine has brightened the pasty Irishmen’s musical musings. Grade: A- ____ Contact Josh Naquin at [email protected]
