Out of all of the drama and controversy surrounding the way N.C. State’s season ended on Sunday night, the best summary of the day came from a player Wolfpack head coach Elliott Avent had never met until the series was over. After junior shortstop Chris Diaz watched home plate umpire Steve Corvi call strike No. 3 on him to end the season, the Florida Gators piled on top of reliever Keenan Kish and celebrated their third consecutive trip to the College World Series. Absent from the celebration? Golden Spikes finalist and Gators star catcher Mike Zunino. Before joining his teammates in a maze of blue jerseys, Zunino had a big hug and a telling message for Avent. “[Zunino] told me, ‘Coach, that’s the best game we have played in all year’,” Avent said. “He said, ‘Your team is so tough; that’s the best game we played all happen.” Despite Tzamtis allowing four runs on just 13 pitches, State was able to charge back from the 4-1 deficit. Freshman Brett Austin hit a towering two-RBI double in the the fourth, Diaz launched a solo home run over the left field bleachers in the fifth, and junior catcher Danny Canela laced a RBI single in left center in the seventh. Holding a 5-4 lead heading to the eighth inning, the lead changes got wild at McKethan Stadium. Florida’s Brian Johnson hit a solo home run to right field to tie the game in the eighth, and Justin Shafer hit a RBI single through the left side to give the Gators a 6-5 lead. Refusing to go down, State fought back in the bottom of the eighth with a Jake Fincher home run that just barely cleared the top of the left field wall. It was Fincher’s first home run of his collegiate career. “Our team has been so resilient all year,” Fincher said. “This has been the funnest team I have ever played on. It’s just extremely emotional now that we know it’s over. “It hasn’t really hit me yet, but I just loved playing on this today.” Florida scored two runs in the top of the 10th, taking the lead on a Daniel Pigott home run that just barely got over the right field wall. Adding another run with a Josh Tobias RBI single, the Gators appeared to finally have the ball game in full control. Well, not quite. With two men on base and one out, Turner hit a sacrifice fly to center field that made the game 9-8. Diaz dug into the batter’s box with one out remaining in State’s season. Taking a two-strike pitch that appeared to be outside on the replay, Diaz exploded with anger and had to be held back by several members of the coaching staff. “It’s emotional; I’ve been emotional,” Avent said. “[Diaz] has given N.C. State University three years of unbelievable hard work, play and toughness. All that can show you is the emotion that is wrapped up into how bad our guys wanted to
