College students in tights, elaborate cotumes and pirouettes can be seen at the annual Dance Concert Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday 2:00 p.m. in the Union Theatre. The event is hosted by the University’s dance program. Every aspect of the concert, including choreography and costumes, was created by students. The dance concert will include interpretive and modern dances. “Everything was made at LSU by the fashion majors,” said Ariel White, production assistant of the concert. “This is really an LSU production.” Molly Buchmann, University dance director, said the concert usually has a good turnout. “It’s usually very popular,” Buchmann said. “We usually get a very good crowd.” White said there are about 150 students participating in the concert. She said the participants have been passing out fliers in hopes of getting “different people involved and aware of the dance program at LSU.” Buchmann said the concert will appeal to all audiences. “We have a diversity of dance styles in the concert,” she said. “There’s something for everyone.” Buchmann said the dance concert each year is the only opportunity for the community to support the dance program. “[The dancers] work and sweat just like athletes, and they deserve our support just like athletes,” Buchmann said. Buchmann said the group of choreographers who worked on the concert this year prepared well in advance. “There’s been no last-minute rushing around,” she said. Students enrolled in dance classes have spent all semester preparing for the concert. Allison Ward, choreographer and history senior, said she is proud of the way her dance has turned out. “I’m very pleased,” she said. “I think my dancers really portray the characters I want them to. It’s very emotional, and I love it.” The concert counts as the students’ final in each dance class.
