LSU has officially named Trent Johnson as its new men’s basketball coach.
Johnson comes to LSU from Stanford, where he spent four seasons and compiled an 80-48 record.
Johnson led the Cardinal to three NCAA tournament appearances during his tenure, including a Sweet 16 appearance this past season.
Johnson will become the first black permanent head coach of a men’s sport in LSU history.
The Berkley, Calif., native will replace John Brady, who was fired in February in the midst of his 11th season at LSU.
Mayor-President Kip Holden attended the press conference and declared Thursday ‘Trent Johnson Day’ in Baton Rouge.
“On behalf of all the citizens of our city and parish, it gives megreat honor to present two certificates to you,” Holden told Johnson. “First, making you anhonorary mayor-president of the city of Baton Rouge and the parish ofEast Baton Rouge, and the second one is declaringtoday ‘Trent JohnsonDay’ in the city of Baton Rouge and the parish of East Baton Rouge.”
