Tiger Stadium’s signature signs received facelifts this week. The new sign covering the back of the scoreboard facing South Stadium Drive will now denote LSU’s 2007 Bowl Championship Series National Championship victory. Construction workers closed part of the South Stadium Drive sidewalk Wednesday to change the sign. Workers also blocked traffic on part of North Stadium Drive between Tiger Stadium and the PMAC on Tuesday to replace the traditional “LSU Tiger Stadium” sign. The signature sign on North Stadium Drive did not undergo a design change but was replaced because of fading and weathering. Eddie Nunez, associate athletic director of operations and project development, said these renovations are typically done every three years. Nunez said the total cost of each sign renovation is about $12,000. The funding comes from the athletic department’s maintenance budget. Many fans think the signs are painted on the back of the scoreboards, but Nunez said they are actually made of vinyl fabric that covers the metal-framed scoreboard. Nunez said increased sun damage causes the South Stadium Drive sign to be replaced more frequently.
