Republican Louis “Woody” Jenkins, of Baton Rouge, and Democrat “Don” Cazayoux, of New Roads, will go head-to-head in the May 3 general election for the 6th Congressional District.
Jenkins and Cazayoux won their party primary run-offs with 62 percent and 57 percent, respectively. Jenkins won in all nine parishes.
Jenkins, former long-time state congressman, was forced into the second primary after receiving 49.87 percent of the vote in the March 8 primary. Cazayoux led the first Democratic primary with 35 percent.
The congressional seat, vacated in February by Richard Baker, has been held by a Republican for 32 years. Baker stepped down to become the president and CEO of Managed Funds Association.
Jenkins was endorsed by the East Baton Rouge Republican Party before the first primary.
The AFL-CIO, Baton Rouge Police and Firefighters and National Rifle Association endorsed Cazayoux.
