Colour Revolt may be from a small Mississippi town, but they are certainly not a small Mississippi band.
Colour Revolt will celebrate the release of their new album, “Plunder, Beg, and Curse,” Saturday night at The Spanish Moon, along with performances from The Little Ones and Ra Ra Riot.
The Oxford, Miss. band recently signed with their first professional label, Fat Possum Records, which operates out of Oxford.
“It is one of the most respected labels around,” said Patrick Addison, the band’s bassist.
The label also features artists such as The Black Keys, Andrew Bird and Dax Riggs.
The band hopes the label will help increase Colour Revolt’s fan base, but they do not think signing with a big label will have a negative effect on their music.
“It is just another label to release records,” Addison said. “We are still the same people, still writing the same songs.”
Guitarist Jimmy Cajoleas said he considers Colour Revolt an indie-rock band but with a broader range of rock ‘n’ roll.
Jesse Coppenbarger, who sings and plays the guitar and keyboard, said though bands such as Slipknot and The Books inspire their music, Colour Revolt does not sound like anybody else.
“We take influence from everywhere,” Addison said. “Not even from music, but from movies and literature. We are not striving to sound like anybody. We just want to sound like ourselves.”
Addison said the new album’s sound is difficult to describe.
“We leave it up to the interpretation of our listeners,” he said.
Brad Stire, graphic design sophomore, said he has listened to Colour Revolt for the past few years.
“They’re becoming some of the most respected artists in the South,” he said. “Their music has become more and more mature.”
Tyler Thibault, public relations junior, said Coppenbarger’s voice intrigues him.
“It can be raw and loud but then the next moment, delicate and soft. His voice just expels so much emotion it’s hard not to take notice,” he said.
The band members, all natives of Jackson, Miss. were all previously part of other bands.
“We all came to [Ole Miss] and reformed to Colour Revolt,” Addison said. “We have been together for about three years.”
Though the band plays several regional shows a year, its fans do not just hail from the South.
“We actually play more shows outside of Mississippi than in Mississippi,” Addison said. “Our fan base isn’t just local.”
The band has played all over the nation as well as in other countries, such as Canada, he said.
Colour Revolt has also performed at some of the nation’s top musical events, including South by Southwest and Lollapalooza.
This year’s tour with The Breeders includes many major cities, such as San Diego and Las Vegas.
And also among the tour’s stops this year are Bonnaroo Music Festival and Austin City Limits Music Festival, Cajoleas said.
“Bonnaroo is going to be hot as hell, but it will be fun,” Addison said.
Performing at these types of events has practically become routine for the band.
“We don’t get nervous anymore,” Cajoleas said. “We just bring the ruckus.”
Even though Colour Revolt has played at many well known events, the band still enjoys playing at low-key bars, such as The Spanish Moon.
“Baton Rouge is one our favorite places to play and one of our best markets,” Addison said. “We have more fans in Baton Rouge than we do in Oxford.”
He said the band has been performing in Baton Rouge for years, and at least 200 people have attended each show.
Ed Reyes, a member of The Little Ones, said the band is looking forward to opening for Colour Revolt.
“It will be a real treat,” he said. “Their music is cool, and we are excited to check it out.”
Colour Revolt will perform at 10 p.m. Tickets are $10.
