With Apple’s announcement of new iPhone software comes good news for the device’s users on campus. With iPhone 2.0 software, students may soon be able to access the University’s wireless network. The free update, which includes new enterprise features, will be available to all iPhone customers by the end of June. “It should make it actually work because the iPhones were not originally meant to work with the 3G network, and that’s what we use on campus,” said Sheri Thompson, Information Technology planning and communications officer. “That’s what a lot of places in the United States use, but instead, [iPhones] use the Edge network. Edge is very common in Europe and other places, so the new enterprise software will be able to connect to the 3G network.” Christopher Peters, economics senior, said he uses the Internet feature on his iPhone a lot. “I see iPhones all over campus, so I know that they are popular,” he said. “So I kind of feel that it’s not necessarily the students’ responsibility to find a way to work around finding an Internet source.” Thompson said enabling iPhone access to “lsusecure” is not a move for the University to become more Apple-friendly. Peters said he is happy that he will be able to use the Internet feature on campus because the Internet connection will be much faster than what the Edge network offers. But Peters said he is disappointed the University did not find a way to allow iPhone users to access “lsusecure” earlier. “It seems like the IT department needs to work a little harder to make the phone work with their networks because I know that other universities don’t have the same problems,” he said.
