Student offended by ‘liberal crossword’Let me preface this letter by saying that I am not normally one to be offended since I often take things in with a grain of salt. But this just draws the line. I am referring to the Crossword Puzzle Mr. David created. While very clever satire was presented in his depiction of a “Liberal Crossword,” I feel there was a very sensitive line that was crossed when one of his clues said “I am tolerant of all, unless you’re ___” with the word in the blank being Jews. Now I understand and find most satire amusing, but this depiction of Mr. David’s version of satire is offensive. I personally am a proud Jew but have had to overcome many stereotypes and cruel jokes intended to be humorous but turn out to just be mean. Society has come so far in accepting others who are different than the majority but thanks to the thoughtlessness of Mr. David’s crossword clue, some people will still continue to think it’s OK to poke fun at Jews and minorities in general. Please take into account that many diverse religions and cultures get made fun of everyday by people and they don’t need a writer in a college paper encouraging people to make fun of them more.Nancy Pessesanimal sciences sophomoreTrue fans don’t leave earlyI was in Tiger Stadium this past Saturday for what I thought would be another typical homecoming blowout win. However, instead I witnessed one of the greatest things and one of the saddest things that I have ever seen at an LSU football game. I’d like to begin by calling out the fair-weather fans portion of the student section. If you left the game before halftime, or shortly after the Trojans scored in the third quarter, I’m talking to you. Also, if you booed Jarrett Lee at any point during the game, I’m especially talking to you. Please do all of us true Tiger fans a favor and sell your ticket to next week’s game against Ole Miss. We don’t want you there, nor do we need you there. If any of you think booing Jarrett Lee is going to make him play better, you’re an idiot. Don’t get me wrong, I have been frustrated watching him play many times this year, and I wanted to see Jordan Jefferson play just as much as the next guy, but you will never hear me boo a redshirt freshman quarterback who just a few months ago was third on the depth chart. Lee was thrown into this position two years before he was supposed to be here. If you want to be mad at anyone, it should be Ryan Perrilloux. If you want to boo the play calling, I have no problem with that. But booing a player for bad play does nothing but hurt his confidence. The only time you should ever boo a player on your own team is for lack of effort. Now let me explain to you sorry excuses for Tiger fans what happened when you left after Troy went up 31-3. In front of a dead Tiger Stadium filled with about 20,000 of its truest fans, Jarrett Lee engineered five scoring drives to turn an embarrassing loss into the greatest comeback in Tiger football history. Lee found his confidence and was making plays. And do you want to know what the true fans who were still left in the student section were chanting after the game? JARR-ET-LEE…JARR-ET-LEE. That’s because we understand that Lee is young and will make mistakes. We understand that Lee was put into an unfair, but unavoidable situation in being asked to carry the load as the Tigers quarterback this year. And most of all, we understand that the only way he can get better is if he has our support. So once again fair-weather fans, if you’re going to come to Tiger Stadium and boo your own team, just don’t show up at all next week. Sell your ticket and use the extra money to get drunk at Serrano’s before the game starts, rather than begging halftime to get here so you can feel comfortable about leaving early.Brennon Hughes civil engineering junior—-Contact The Daily Reveille’s opinion staff at [email protected]
