Terrance Toliver was a little frustrated with his playing time early in the season.”I didn’t let it control my ego,” the sophomore wide receiver said. “I’m a team player. I really didn’t get mad like you’d think I would. I’m playing now, and I’m just trying to help my team win.” Toliver received little playing time early in the season, falling behind Chris Mitchell and Jared Mitchell on the depth chart. But his recent emergence as a weapon for the Tigers has opened up the passing game. “I guess [the coaches] have more faith in me now,” he said. “They get me the ball more. They know I can make plays, and that is what I am trying to do.” He said defenses are starting to put more men at the line of scrimmage because of the success of the Tigers’ running game. As a result LSU is passing more and getting into more three- and four- receiver sets.Toliver had no catches in the first three games and six catches in the following five games. But he has 12 catches in the Tigers’ past three games — catches that have been big plays. Toliver said his coaches told him at the beginning of the season he would need to make big plays. “That’s what I’ve been doing,” Toliver said. “When they give me the ball, it seems like it’s every third down or when we need a key catch.”His teammates have noticed his ability to keep drives going. “He’s just starting to come up big on every third down — especially on third and long,” said junior wide receiver Brandon LaFell.Toliver had a big second half against Troy two weeks ago, grabbing four balls for 54 yards, which opened the field up for LaFell, who finished that game with 12 catches for 126 yards. “They are already keying on me and Byrd,” LaFell said. “But they’re not keying on Toliver so much. So when he gets out there and starts making more plays, they can’t double team me and Byrd as much.” Toliver continued his string of good play against Ole Miss and led the Tigers with five catches. “Terrance, the last few games, has really made great plays,” said LSU junior tight end Richard Dickson. “He’s come along late in the season and made the plays that need to be made. That’s just what you need on a team, you need a guy to step up and make plays. Terrance is going to be there for us next year, and he’s going to be a great player. He’s going to be something [opposing defenses] have to worry about.”Toliver caught his first touchdown of the season — which was also freshman quarterback Jordan Jefferson’s first career passing touchdown — against Ole Miss. “I was happy for him, and I was happy for myself — to get my first touchdown,” Toliver said. “It was just an all-out go [route], and I felt I could out jump [the defender]. [Jefferson] just threw it up, and I made a play.”LaFell said he is excited to see what Toliver will do for the rest of the season. “I feel real good about his situation,” LaFell said. “He’s got a lot of potential.”—-Contact Amos Morale at [email protected]
