This Saturday’s game marks the 97th time Ole Miss and LSU have gone head-to-head, but it’s the first time the rivalry game will have an official name — The Magnolia Bowl. LSU and Ole Miss’ student governments collaborated in the “Name that Rivalry” campaign, in which students text messaged their ideas for what to name the infamous match-up. “It was an idea presented to me by former SG Vice President Josh King,” said SG Director of Athletics Andrew Remson. “It was something he and Ole Miss students wanted carried out.” Thirty of the suggestions were presented to the student senates of both universities. Those suggestions were narrowed down to three, which students voted on via e-mail. “After that process, the Magnolia Bowl was finally decided on,” Remson said. “And we had great student response to it.”Remson said the rich history behind the LSU-Ole Miss rivalry deserved an official name. “It started back in 1894, and it’s our second-longest rivalry,” Remson said. “It’s been heated over the years, and every time we play them everyone gets insane. There’s just something about it.”A lag in the excitement of students spurred the idea to give the game a title. “It’s lost it’s touch and flavor over the years,” Remson said. “But Ole Miss is building a new program, and it’s going to be an exciting game.”The winner of Saturday’s game will be presented with the Magnolia Bowl trophy, designed by Evan Trapp, art senior, and Joe Stablier, owner of the Trophy House. The trophy was designed to feature a magnolia atop a wooden base, according to Corey Weber, former SG director of Transportation. Weber said the trophy is being hidden until the game, but pictures of the trophy’s mock-up leaked onto the Internet. “There was a first rendering that people were pretty upset with,” Weber said. “But the real trophy doesn’t look anything like the pictures that leaked.”The original design of the trophy was revised because it didn’t meet Weber and the Athletic Department’s expectations. “It really didn’t look professional enough for what we wanted it for,” Weber said. “It was good-looking, but it was more of an artistic display.”The words “Inspired by a great rivalry, forged by students and carried on by tradition,” are inscribed into the back of the trophy’s base. Weber said he’s the only person who has seen the completed trophy. “It’s superior to the Boot trophy and even to the SEC trophy,” Weber said. “It looks amazing.”Weber said the trophy will be unveiled at a ceremony before kick-off, and the official presentation will take place after the game.—-Contact Katie Kennedy at [email protected]
