Several former and current LSU athletes made Olympic teams this past weekend at their respective trials.
Former Lady Tiger Muna Lee won the women’s 100-meter dash Saturday at the U.S. Olympic Trials in Eugene, Ore.
Lee, who earned 20 All-American honors in her LSU career, ran a personal best 10.85 seconds in the event to win by 0.05 seconds.
Junior sprinter Trindon Holliday and former Tiger Xavier Carter both failed to make the U.S. Olympic team in the 100-meter dash.
Holliday finished seventh with a time of 10.17 seconds in his semifinal heat. Runners must finish in the top four in a semifinal heat to qualify for the final.
Carter qualified for the final but finished in eighth place at 10.11 seconds. He will compete in the 200-meter dash trials July 4.
Athletes must finish in the top three in the trial final as well as reach the Olympic ‘A’ qualifying standard to make it to the games.
Former Arkansas sprinter Tyson Gay won the 100-meter dash with a wind-aided time of 9.68 seconds. The other American 100-meter representatives are NCAA 200-meter champion Walter Dix of Florida State and professional Darvis Patton.
Lady Tiger junior Nickiesha Wilson and former Tiger Isa Phillips made the Jamaican squad in the 400-meter hurdles Saturday.
Both runners finished second in their trials and have won NCAA titles in the event. Wilson won her title June 13, and Phillips won his in 2007.
Lee, Wilson and Phillips will join senior LSU sprinters Richard Thompson and Kelly-Ann Baptiste at the Olympic Games in Beijing, China, beginning Aug. 8.
Thompson and Baptiste qualified for the Trinidad and Tobago Olympic team in the 100-meter dash June 21.
