Sidney Lowe II, son of N.C. State basketball coach Sidney Lowe, was sentenced to a 15-month prison term in a Guilford County court on Tuesday.
According to reports in the News & Observer, the prison term, which was initially 11 years, was drastically reduced by the judge due to what he called “extraordinary mitigation” which justified a lesser sentence.
Lowe will now serve his time in a low security prison farm in Guilford County and upon release will be subject to five years probation and 250 hours of community service.
Lowe was initially arrested in March 2007 on charges stemming from two armed robberies in Guilford County.
Lowe pleaded guilty to possession of marijuana and Ecstasy, conspiracy to commit robbery with a dangerous weapon and six counts each of both robbery with a dangerous weapon and kidnapping.
Almost all of the charges came from the second of the two robberies, a home invasion in mid-March 2007.
Although Lowe has not commented on his son’s situation, he took the stand in court to testify about his son’s dilemma, according to a story in the News & Observer Wednesday.
“Obviously I love my son,” the coach said. “I feel sorry for the victims … but that wasn’t my son. If given an opportunity, if given a second chance, I know he can be a very productive person in society. I ask the court to have mercy on him and give him a second chance.”
