Dawn has finally broken in the world of pop culture, and I can see the light for the first time in years.I didn’t think I would see it in my lifetime.I thought I would die of old age, be trampled by wild horses or strangled by a garden hose before this happened. But now that this most holy of days had dawned, I couldn’t be happier.Britney is back. That’s right, the indomitable spirit of Ms. Spears has prevailed over the tabloid rumors, the failed marriage and the train wreck partying. Britney Spears is back and better than ever.I mean, have you seen those recent bikini pictures? That’s the Britney we all know and love.No longer must we “leave Britney alone!” as Chris Crocker so elegantly put it. Instead we can rejoice in her decision to rejoin the living. Her hair has grown and so has her pride as she puts away the Cheetos, Frappuccinos and Carl’s Jr. bags in exchange for a balanced diet and a trip to her favorite dance studio. But it wasn’t merely Britney’s return to her old looks that solidified her comeback. That distinction was reserved for Sept. 7 when Britney took the stage in a Versace mini dress and grabbed three VMAs for best female video, best pop video and video of the year for her single “Give Me More.”So it’s not the Grammy’s, but this shining Britney is a far cry from Britney a year ago with her strange relationship with paparazzo Adnan Ghalib, enabling manager Sam Lutfi and her bloated, uninspired rendition of “Give Me More” on the same stage all culminating in her breakdown last January.Spears thanked God, her “two beautiful boys” and her fans, adding that “this is for you.”Spears’ speech was greeted with a standing ovation and just like that, Britney was back.I knew Britney couldn’t be down and out for long. She’s the Madonna of our generation — assuming Madonna isn’t in fact the Madonna of our generation.Britney really only had two options at this point — death or a comeback. She is far too important to our national sense of self to simply fade into obscurity. Britney would have to either go out with a bang or come back with a smile. Luckily for us, she chose to the latter.Death would have put her in the ranks of James Dean, Marilyn Monroe and Heath Ledger. But a comeback puts her in the company of Neil Diamond, Tina Turner and Johnny Cash.I can only hope her career lasts as long as theirs. Spears’ road to recovery has been a long and thought out process — beginning Jan. 31 when Spears was placed back in the custody of her father. Ghalib and Lutfi were soon out of her life, her finances were now in safe hands and bodyguards kept the paparazzi at bay.The tabloids had lost their favorite target, as she all but disappeared from PerezHilton.com and similar gossip blogs.I have a feeling this cessation of frenetic media attention has a big part to play in Britney’s comeback. Only when people learned to truly “leave Britney alone” was she able to recover.Soon she was able to see her sons again, she was back in the recording studio and she made a successful guest spot on the sitcom “How I Met Your Mother.”Spears’ father, Jamie Spears, seems to be the hero of this tale, as opposed to her mother, Lynn, who is in the process of publishing a tell all book about her famous spawn. As happy as I am to see Britney back in her rightful place at the top, a part of me will miss the head-shaving Britney, the underwear-clad-ocean-romping Britney and of course the pantyless-partying-with-Paris Britney. She was fun. With the increase in media attention her return to glory will undoubtedly bring, it will be interesting to see how Spears handles herself.I can only fervently wish Britney will not forsake her fans again with another fall from glory. A second comeback is much harder to orchestrate. So here is to leaving Britney alone, once again. Positive media attention can be just as taxing as the negative. Keep the paparazzi from crowding around her when she leaves the studio and causing car accidents as she tries to drive away by refusing to read the tabloids where they post her pictures. You can help Britney in her rise back to the top. Stop reading this column if you must.I promise I won’t hold it against you. I would do anything to keep Britney on the bandwagon. As long as she continues to churn out pop hits and wear scandalous outfits, I’ll be happy. So come on Britney, give me more.—-contact Caitlyn Scott at [email protected]
