The Wolfpack Club hopes to nab a $200,000 prize later this month when Iron Horse Auction Company auctions off 98 acres of land that the Club received as a donation.
According to Ed Stack, senior associate director of the Wolfpack Club, the booster group is using the same method the College of Agriculture has used for years.
“We’re seeing more and more people use real estate as a way to donate to the Wolfpack Club,” Stack said. “It’s really a method that’s been used across campus before.”
A private donor gave the land to the Wolfpack Club, and it will be auctioned off on Aug. 26 either as one large piece or in separate parcels. Stack says the land had been on sale through a real estate agent, but that the Club decided to auction it off. He added the group will not accept anything fewer than $200,000.
“We had it on the market for a while but decided we wanted to try something different, so we’re giving the auction a try,” Stack said.
And though it’s the first auction of land the Wolfpack Club has participated in, they have been selling donated property for the past few years.
“We actually just closed on a piece of property that its owner gave us,” Stack said. “We sold it as a traditional sale.”
The money from the sale of the auctioned land will go to State’s athlete scholarship endowment, per the request of the donor.
The Wolfpack Club has auctioned off other items in the past. Two years ago, the Club held an event at the RBC Center where it auctioned off items like autographed memorabilia and vacation packages. The Club also participates in a spring caravan, where the school’s coaches visit the state’s communities. At times, Stack says, those towns, as Lumberton did this year, will hold their own auctions to benefit the Wolfpack Club.
“Land auctions are completely different, and we keep seeing more of them,” Stack said.
As for the land auction, Stack says the Club usually does not consider using the land for school facilities. The Wolfpack Club uses the money gained from auctions or sales in the manner the donor requested.
