Two things are expected to take the University by storm today: the first day of classes and what’s left of Tropical Storm Fay.As of 7 p.m. on Sunday, the remnants of Tropical Storm Fay was stalled in southern Mississippi and expected to stay there for up to 24 hours. It is projected to drop two to four inches of rain to Baton Rouge today, with some local areas receiving six to 10 inches of rain and winds in the 10 to 20 mph range. Flash flood warnings are in effect throughout the day, but the campus area is expected to effectively drain the waters.”The way it looks right now, it’s more of just a wet spell, a bit of an annoyance,” said Jay Grymes, University climatologist and WAFB chief meteorologist. “The way it looks right now, it’s more of just a wet spell, a bit of an annoyance.”Grymes pinpointed Burbank Drive between Nicholson Drive and West Parker Boulevard — commonly known as the Burbank Curve — and the underpass on Acadian Thruway near Perkins Road as areas that may see flooding.Area rivers and bayous are relatively low, and Grymes said he does not believe flooding will be a severe problem.Baton Rouge could receive as much as 10 inches of rain said Barry Keim, Louisiana State Climatologist. “The possibility exists for getting more than six inches,” Keim said, suggesting Baton Rouge could feel the effects of Fay through Tuesday. The storm, which was never upgraded to hurricane status, left as much as 25 inches of rain in some parts of Florida, causing flash flooding issues, Keim said. Fay moved into Florida and “essentially made four landfalls,” an unprecedented amount, he said.In the event of extreme weather conditions, University spokeswoman Kristine Calongne recommended students watch the University’s Web site for updates on a closure of the University.”All of these things we have to take on a case-by-case basis,” she said. “They’re all different, and they all do different things.””It’ll be a nasty day,” said Gregory Stone, coastal studies and WAVCIS (Wave-Curent-Surge Information System for Coastal Louisiana) director. “But it’s nothing that we haven’t experienced in the past.”–Contact Lindsey Meaux at [email protected]
