A University student died Wednesday night as a result of meningitis, according to a broadcast e-mail sent out this morning.
The student was not named in the e-mail, and in the e-mail, acting Chancellor William Jenkins assured students that all who came in contact with the person “have been notified and provided with medication.”
The Advocate reported Thursday afternoon that the student was Kaleigh Lynn Guy, a 22-year-old native of Greensburg.
Guy was not enrolled in summer school nor a campus resident at the time of her death.
The e-mail did not specify whether the death was a result of bacterial or viral meningitis.
Tim Honigman, University Student Health Center medical director, told The Advocate that about 25 of Guy’s co-workers at LSU Tiger Talk and those who Guy recently came in contact with had been treated and showed no symptoms of the disease.
Meningitis is an inflammation of the protective membranes covering the brain and spinal cord.
Some of the most common symptoms of the infection are severe headaches, stiffness of the neck and sudden high fever. Other symptoms include the inability to tolerate loud noises or bright lights and possible seizures.
If anyone has any questions or concerns about meningitis, Jenkins suggested they contact the University Student Health Center at 225-578-6271.
