A bill to increase tuition by up to 5 percent failed to pass on the floor of the Louisiana House of Representatives on Monday.
House Bill 734, introduced by Rep. Donald Trahan, R-Lafayette, would have increased public state universities’ and colleges’ revenue by increasing students’ tuitions.
The bill received a 68-31 vote in the House. The bill needed approval from two-thirds of the 105-member House, who were not all present.
The bill is now waiting for a motion for reconsideration.
During the debate on the House floor, Trahan said increasing tuition is how the state has historically funded universities and colleges.
“It’s not an easy vote, but it’s a necessary vote,” Trahan said. “Let’s help our colleges and universities.”
