The deadline to apply for damages from Hurricanes Gustav and Ike are approaching, Dasha Castillo, the Department of Homeland Security/FEMA said Tuesday.
The deadline to apply for Gustav damages is Wednesday, while the deadline to apply for damages from Ike is Friday, Dec. 26.
Hurricane victims can apply by calling 1-800-621-3362, visiting www.fema.gov or receiving face-to-face help at one of the disaster recovery centers located throughout the affected parishes, Castillo said.
Castillo said applicants should have their Social Security information and the address of the damaged property available, as well as insurance information if applicable.
Applicants should also have banking information available for direct deposits.
Castillo also stressed that people needed to apply for each storm’s damages individually.
“I actually spoke to a gentleman today who was a Katrina applicant, and he thought that because was a Katrina applicant he didn’t have to register again,” Castillo said. “They have to register for each individual storm.”
