An unidentified man was shot at 514 East State St. on Sunday night at 9:15 p.m. after allegedly trying to break into the residence, according to police reports.
Cpl. L’Jean McKneely, Baton Rouge Police Department spokesman, said the man was shot by the resident of the apartment and is in critical but not life-threatening condition.
McKneely said he could not identify the injured man because he had not been arrested but said he was 26 years old and lived in the area.
McKneely said at this time no charges had been filed against the shooter, but the incident is still under investigation.
The man who was shot will be arrested in connection with the burglary after he is released from the hospital, McKneely said.
Denise Jacobs, who lives across the street from where the shooting occurred, said she heard the gun shots and then heard a man moaning and yelling for help from across the street.
Jacobs said when she called 911, the operator told her to stay in her apartment and lock the doors.
Jacobs said she had never heard of problems with burglaries in the area, and that she is also concerned about the fact that someone owns a gun in her neighborhood.
“I’m as concerned about the gun ownership as I am about the break-in,” Jacobs said. “[The police] came to see if any stray bullets had come this direction. I think that’s kind of scary.”
