East Baton Rouge Parish Metro Council will vote at 4 p.m. today on a proposed drink special ban.
The Campus Community Coalition for Change’s proposal would make it illegal for bars to sell alcohol for less than the established price after 8 p.m.
The proposed ordinances would also make it illegal for bars to sell alcohol in high volume, for a discounted price, for free or as part of a drinking game.
The Metro Council debated the ordinance in December and voting was deferred to this afternoon after some members said they thought changes were necessary.
The administrative office of the Metro Council provided The Daily Reveille a final copy of the ordinance which has three modifications to the original version.
The first modification states that an admission fee does not allow an establishment to serve alcohol free of charge. Previously, the ordinance did not consider the possibility of charging an admission fee.
The second modification allows individual establishments to determine the customary, usual or retail price – the original version did not say how to determine a customary price.
The third modification added a paragraph at the end of the proposal which made the eight sections of the ordinance “separate and severable.”
The added paragraph states that if one section of the law is deemed invalid, it does not nullify the rest of the law, which means each part of the law would have to be abolished individually.
Students have spoken out against the proposed ban.
The Student Government Senate passed a resolution asking the Metro Council not to pass the ordinance.
At a press conference held Tuesday, members of SG gave a packet to students who expressed interests in speaking at the hearing.
Michelle Gieg, SG president, said SG is not fighting the ordinance in support of alcohol but instead wants to encourage the CCCC to find more productive means to curb dangerous activities.
“The reason Student Government is lobbying against this policy is SG feels that the CCCC could be using its resources to enhance the quality of student life in potentially destructive situations,” Gieg said.
